Types of bites

Types of bites:

  1. Overbite: An overbite is when your maxillary (upper jaw/teeth) hangs over your lower jaw/ teeth. Overbite can be cause by many things such as genetics, the position of your jaw, sucking your thumb, grinding your teeth, or just a smaller lower jaw. An overbite cannot fix itself, It can be fixed by the orthodontist with braces or oral surgery.Overbite can cause issues and pains such as headaches, discomfort with your jaw, problems chewing, or TMJ disorder.
  2. Underbite: Underbite is when your lower jaw and teeth is in-front of your upper teeth. It can be inherited by genetics, tongue thrusts, nail biting, sucking on your thumb, on a pacifier, and early childhood for breastfeeding. An underbite can be fixed oral surgery, braces with bands, or clear aligners. Underbite cannot be fixed itself.Underbite can cause breathing problems, headache’s, discomfort in lower jaw, and chewing problems.

  3. Deep bite : A deep bite and an over bite are the same thing but a deep bite occurs when your upper teeth overlap your lower teeth dramatically by 4mm or more. Having a deep bite can cause many problems such as: chewing problems, teeth grinding, sores in your mouth (mouth sores), cavities, tooth and gum sensitivity, jaw discomfort and pain, and speech problems. A deep bite can get worse overtime and is suggested to get fixed right away. You can fix a deep bite by getting the following: braces, clear alignments, head gears, and oral surgery.

  4. Crossbite: A crossbite occurs when a singular tooth or teeth is not lined is correctly when you mouth is closed. In other words, your teeth are not in alignment. Having it means you upper jaw is smaller than your lower jaw causing your upper teeth fit into your lower.  Cross bites and be incredibly painful. Cross bites can be cause by: thumb sucking, genetics, pulling baby teeth too early, and baby teeth coming out too late. Being left untreated can cause cavities, gum disease, TMD, teeth grinding, headaches, and jaw muscle and neck pain. You can fix a cross bite by getting an extraction, tooth reshaping, braces, palate expanders, and retainers.

Anterior crossbite: when the bottom front teeth fits over the top teeth

Posterior crossbite: when the lower back teeth fits over the top teeth.
5.  Open bite: An open bite is when your upper teeth do not close down all the way or meet your lower teeth when you bite down. A major factor causing an open bite will be thumb sucking. Other factors include tongue thrusting while you’re eating, chewing, or just sitting and breathing. Most, if not all people who has an open bite are mouth breathers and sleeps with their mouth open. If you have an open bite you may experience difficulty eating and speech problems. To fix an open bite you can get braces, head gear, and oral surgery.6.  Spacing: spacing is when you have space in between some if not all teeth making gaps in between them. If you have spacing teeth it typically means you have small teeth. This can easily be fixed with braces or clear aligners.7.  Crowding: Crowding happens when there is not enough space in your mouth for all of your teeth causing your teeth to overlap one another. This can cause major oral health issues like gum inflammation and disease, cavities, and tooth loss. Having crowding, it can be difficult to brush and floss in between your overlapping teeth leaving all the sugar, food, and gunk in between them. This makes it easy for cavities to hide and for plaque and tartar to form.

Easy solutions to fix over lapping is tooth extractions, braces ( if crowding is 4mm or less)

8.  Abnormal eruptions: abnormal eruption is when the tooth grows in the wrong way/spot and is cut off or disturbed from fully emerging out. Most people with abnormal eruption usually have “vampire”  teeth. This is when your canines or extra teeth grow in above your gum line. Abnormal eruptions can also happen on the mandibular jaw. Abnormal eruptions are easy to fix with braces and sometimes clear aligners.
